Long thought to be the work of mysterious people that preceded the Kanaks in New Caledonia, petroglyphs are engravings on rocks or stones.
Going towards Thio-Village, you will be in the Petroglyph district. On the right, after the Chez Naël store, you will find a small square in the middle of which are blocks of stone engraved with petroglyphs.
Remarkably preserved, these engravings are generally associated with the first inhabitants of New Caledonia. They have not yet been dated with precision, but experts believe that the petroglyphs began with the settlement of the archipelago around 1050 BC and lasted until the 1930s.
