Classed as a protected area, Ouen Toro hill is the perfect spot for a pleasant family walk or sporty run. Standing 132 metres high, its esplanade dominates the south of Nouméa and offers a 360° view of the city, lagoon and foothills of the mountain range. The peaceful park trails surrounded by native dry forest species are great for recharging your batteries. The signposted trails are also very popular with people exercising and walking their dogs. Some take you to the top of the hill, one of the best spots for admiring the sunset. Before you start your hike, make sure you have something to drink, as there are no water points en route or at the top.
Good to know: since 1988, the Ouen Toro city park (50 hectares) has been protected by Province Sud with the aim of preserving its ecosystem. The dry forest—one of the last in Nouméa along with the Parc Zoologique et Forestier—extends over 3 hectares and is part of a reforestation programme.
