The Massabielle Cave, more commonly known as the Lourdes Cave, has over 1,000 replicas: more than 700 in France and over 300 around the world. One of these replicas is located in the Unia tribe in Yaté.
On June 19, 1955, for the Feast of the Sacred Heart—also the Patronal Feast of the tribe—a large crowd gathered from all corners of New Caledonia for the blessing and inauguration of the monumental Lourdes Cave. It was built at the foot of the mountain that represents the Pyrenees, where the Gave River originates to nourish Lourdes. At the edge of this river lies the miraculous rock of Massabielle, where the Immaculate Virgin appeared to the shepherdess.
The Unia cave was constructed based on the plans and directives of an elderly catechist: "To this cave, people will come to draw strength and courage to patiently navigate through storms and trials."
