At the edge of the Forgotten Coast, Mwara beach is fringed with coconut palms. Ideal for a day trip or camping weekend, its fringing reef is also popular with divers who come to admire its rich diversity of flora and fauna. The wreck of La Joliette, an ore carrier used to transport nickel from Thio to Nouméa at the start of the 20th century, is a well-known spot for scuba diving and free diving. When darkness falls, the absence of light pollution gives visitors a clear view of the thousands of stars in the night sky. There's a campsite with sanitary facilities (cold water), where you can also picnic during the day.

Note: it’s not unusual to see a dugong that appears to have made its home in the bay. However, it's best not to approach it, as it likes playing with people but doesn’t know it's own strength!
