These submerged cavities are the result of two activities: human and natural. When a doline forms naturally, it is due to the solubility of a mass of soil that eventually collapses after prolonged periods of rain, creating a cavity. Conversely, when a doline forms due to human activity, specifically mining, the excavated cavities become submerged with rainwater and water from the "shallow groundwater table."
