Dolines are a natural curiosity that continues to intrigue the scientific community. And do you know what a doline is? Come and discover those of the Grand Sud, known to be the most astonishing in the territory!
These submerged cavities are the result of two activities: human and natural. When a doline forms naturally, it is due to the solubility of a mass of soil that eventually collapses after prolonged periods of rain, creating a cavity. Conversely, when a doline forms due to human activity, specifically mining, the excavated cavities become submerged with rainwater and water from the "shallow groundwater table."
So, come discover the Grand Sud by seeking out these curiosities! For researchers and enthusiasts of the aquatic world and its inhabitants, dolines are a vibrant habitat teeming with surprisingly small species, including :
- Insect and worm larvae
- Gastropod mollusks
- Aquatic bugs (heteropterans)
- Aquatic beetles
- Daphnia
- Ostracods and conchostracans...
♦ Did you know?
In 2006, 8,601 dolines were recorded in the Southern Massif, encompassing nearly the entire Grand Sud region.
Many adventurers in the Grand Sud observe these impressive "holes" submerged in water after long periods of rain. The water is such a clear blue that we can't wait to dive in!
